After a period of 10 years, the Fairfax Battalia is proud to be returning to Mapledurham to transport the visitor back to the time of the English Civil War. This is an ideal opportunity to gain a taste of life in the mid-seventeenth century from one of the best re-enactment groups in the country. See how it would have been for both soldier and civilian, for ordinary people and aristocrats.
The Fairfax Battalia is a widely respected and renowned re-enactment group, representing a company of soldiers from Sir Thomas Fairfax's New Model Army regiment, circa 1645. We demonstrate all the activities, skills and weapons of an infantry regiment of the period. These will be demonstrated in a formal drill display, and put into action in a skirmish with the Royalist enemy, showing the sights and sounds, drama and excitement of combat from the period. Visitors can also take the opportunity to wander around the soldier's camp throughout the day and interact with the soldiers, perhaps trying on armour or handling a musket, or take part in the intrigue and politics of the camp.
Portraying 17th century civilian and domestic life is an important aspect of our re-enactments. We don't just illustrate how the soldiers fought, but also how they lived. The soldier's camp would not only include soldier's tents and officers quarters, but also a sutlery (kitchen) providing authentic food for the soldiers and finer fare for the aristocratic officers. Other activities may include camp followers, such as soldier's wives looking after their husbands on campaign, quacks and pedlars looking to earn a quick penny from the army, or a preacher looking to the spiritual wellbeing of the soldiers.
Other everyday activities such as laundering, basket weaving, leather craft and needlework are often on display. Members can also demonstrate the crafts and skills of many 17th century artisans, such as blacksmith, herbalist or surgeon, and these activities may be on display in the living history camp.
All of our members are enthusiastic volunteers, always keen to demonstrate their skills and answer any questions.
