On Sunday, June 6th, Alvis cars from around the world will gather at Mapledurham House for the 2010 International Alvis Day.
We are expecting over 200 of these quintessentially English cars to attend the event, many taking part in the concours and driving ‘gymkhana’ competitions. As well as displays from Alvis suppliers you can expect a hog roast and an English Ale tent from Tring Breweries, the Hertfordshire micro-brewer, and a chance to win prizes in the raffle. The gates open at 10 am and the day is rounded off with prize giving at around 5pm. Why not make a day of it and visit Mapledurham House and Mill and enjoy a picnic in the company of a British motoring icon?
Alvis Cars
Formed in 1920, Alvis produced cars distinguished by their engineering quality and innovation. During the ‘20’s Alvis cars had great success at Brooklands race track and the engineering learning was soon transferred to their production cars. Alvis developed record breaking front wheel drive cars in the mid ‘20’s preceding the current norm by some 60 years. By the mid ‘30’s Alvis were producing around 1,000 cars a year and introduced what has subsequently been hailed as ‘Britain’s best pre-war car’, the 4.3. After the war Alvis produced a range of ‘gentlemen’s saloons and dropheads’ until their closure by British Leyland in the mid ‘60’s.
